Have you ever experienced a new high-energy leader coming on-board and suddenly everything is changing? They start numerous new initiatives, all of which are ranked as very important to the company’s success and suddenly everyone is running in a million different directions? Well, this is a recipe for disaster considering resources inherently are limited and teams tend to respond best to clearly defined mission and goals.

The challenge to envision myself establishing the direction for an [my] organization is particularly relevant at the moment. My organization provides a service most people don’t want; although many need, that is highly regulated, and whose financial margins are continually reduced under pressure from rising personnel costs and regulated reductions in payments. I will prioritize two of the suggested focus points offered by the article to help identify a direction for my organization.
The article’s call to action of “focusing on the wider world” is particularly relevant and prioritizing a focus on strategy are the two points I will prioritize. An opportunity to exploit our current strengths and assets in a way that yields a slightly, or majorly, different path for the organization will present itself. A challenge for me will be to develop the awareness through a disciplined attempt to focus. I expect enlisting the support of co-workers and team members to develop awareness and focus will help with path identification, BUT, they will most likely struggle with remaining disciplined as well.
The first step I will take is to share this article with my supervisor. Regardless of his reaction, I will start with improving my sleep patterns, reduce my drinking of caffeine and alcohol, and begin carving out a few minutes each day to refresh, reflect and refocus on the wider world and ideas it presents for the strategic use of our strengths and assets. Hopefully with the support of my supervisor, we can then help others refresh, reflect and refocus in a setting where we can capture the smaller ideas that will contribute to a significant innovative strategy shift down the different operational path.
Before establishing a direction for the organization, I would first focus on my self-awareness. I need to understand myself and how to manage my own thoughts and emotions. I would meditate and perhaps even play the new game “Tenacity” that was designed to build concentration and calmness. As I build my concentration, I will also be increasing my self-control to focus on specific topics better. This is when I can figure out how to establish a direction for the organization. With my focus zoned in, I would turn my attention to researching the organization and the people within it. It is important to know how the organization started and where it’s at now. Specifically, the work culture including the good and the bad things that affect productivity and morale. A great way to do this is by interviewing employees on all levels and finding out their views and opinions. It will be critical to pay attention and build relationships, not only to understand their views, but also to gain trust and influence. After taking in all of the information and data from my interviews, I should be able to come up with the best concise plan to move forward with to establish a clear and successful direction for the organization. However, I can’t stop there. I will also need the buy in of the employees to really make it happen. For this, I will lean on the teachings of the empathy triad. This part should come relatively easy if I’ve been utilizing it correctly during my interview process. With each interaction, I will try to better understand the person’s perspective, feelings, and learn how I can help them.
